Mussel freedivers

Families gather in the early morning on the beaches in Kerala (India) to freedive for mussels on the rocks and off shore mussel beds. It is a dangerous persuit as tidal currents are notoriously strong, but the demand from tourist restaurants along the coast is such as to outweigh the risks. The men hack at the mussels with a machete and fill their nets or rudimentary cloth slings in order to carry as much weight as will allow for them to still surface. Women on the shore clean and sort them before they are bagged up taken to market.
