The Marwari horse is an indigenous breed of northwest India, mostly found in the state of Rajasthan. It was traditionally kept only by the Rajput and Kashatriya castes of Indian society as a battle mount, but is now not only favoured by Maharajas, but farmers and Bollywood film stars alike. Its numbers declined dramatically following World War II and Indian Independence, but since 2000 there has been a resurgence of interest in the breed, and numbers are increasing. There is a concerted effort by leading breeders to maintain bloodline purity. They are traded at livestock fairs around the region and also privately. Its origins are not proven but it is thought to have blood from Arabia and the Central Asian Steppes. Marwaris have characteristic curved upright ears that when turned inwards touch at the tips.
